The Rescuer radar transponder (or Search And Rescue Radar Transponder) allows the radar transmission of a distress signal to all vessels present in a specific area, provided they are equipped with an X-band radar.
When interrogated by an X-band radar, the SART Rescuer transmits a response signal immediately through the 9 GHz marine band radar. It then indicates precisely the location of the accident (distance and azimuth related to the ship) so that the search and rescue teams can send an alert signal to all vessels sailing close to the accident or shipwreck.
The Rescuer clearly identifies the survival craft on the radar screen by means of a stream of 12 in-line dots. The series of dots represents a scope of about 10 nautical miles. This code is recognised worldwide by the search and rescue teams.
As soon as the signal is received, the Rescuer LED's turn bright and the buzzer sounds, indicating to the crew that help is close and rescue on its way.
